Acupuncture for Pets

Veterinary Acupuncture is a method of healing that originates in ancient China and has been used for thousands of years. It involves placing a tiny needle at certain points throughout the body. The points are typically bundles of nerves and junctions between nerves and muscles. According to Chinese medicine, living creatures have a life force or “Qi” which flows through certain meridians or pathways along the body. Once the needles are inserted they serve to balance the Qi or life force. To provide a more potent stimulus of the point, electrical current can be attached to the needle, this is called electro-acupuncture.

The needle insertion is very quick and typically does not hurt, although some animals may experience the “De Qi” response which is the body receiving the needle. Typically, most animals relax and fall asleep after the needle is inserted. The needles stay in place for around 15-30 minutes depending on the condition and patient. Acupuncture is very safe with minimal side effects, in fact most pet parents report an overall sense of comfort/well-being after the treatment.

Acupuncture can help exponentially with pain, inflammation, swelling, and nerve regeneration. It can be used for ANY health condition; it is very safe with minimal side effects. Some of the most common indications for acupuncture are arthritis, intervertebral disc disease (both acute and chronic), soft tissue trauma, and cancer.
