These advanced diagnostic tools allow our veterinarians to quickly assess your pet’s health status quickly and provide appropriate treatment.
Why Pet Diagnostics Matter
During your pet’s examination, we may recommend laboratory tests using samples of your pet’s blood, urine, skin, hair, or feces. These pet diagnostics are crucial for helping our veterinarians understand your pet’s internal health. Some common reasons for diagnostic bloodwork include:
- Determining internal organ health when your pet is sick
- Routine yearly testing for heartworm or fecal parasites
- Obtaining baseline labwork when your pet is a senior
- Checking for infectious diseases such as Lyme Disease and Leptospirosis
- Management of chronic conditions such as diabetes, thyroid problems, or kidney problems
- Pre-surgical screening to ensure organs are healthy enough for anesthesia
Most of these tests are available on our in-house IDEXX lab equipment, providing fast and reliable results.
Our Comprehensive Diagnostic Services
Complete Blood Count (CBC): A CBC measures the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in a blood sample. These values help our vets diagnose anemia, infections, and leukemia. For pets undergoing treatment, a CBC helps monitor their response to therapy.
Urinalysis (UA): Laboratory testing of your pet’s urine detects substances that normally don’t appear in urine, including protein, sugar, white blood cells, or blood. Urinalysis helps diagnose urinary tract infections, diabetes, dehydration, kidney problems, and other conditions.
Blood Chemistry Panel: This measures your pet’s electrolytes, enzymes, and chemical elements such as calcium and phosphorous levels. These measurements reveal how your pet’s organs are functioning and help accurately diagnose and treat illness. Establishing baseline values allows comparison with future tests to identify developing problems.
Thyroid Level: Thyroid hormones affect metabolism in both cats and dogs. Cats commonly develop hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), causing increased drinking, urination, weight loss, and hyperactivity. Dogs tend to develop hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), causing lethargy, hair loss, and weight gain. Both conditions can be diagnosed with blood tests and managed with medications.
Infectious Disease Screening: We offer 10-minute blood screens for heartworm and tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease in dogs, as well as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and Feline Leukemia Virus in cats.
Fecal Testing: We routinely test for intestinal parasites, including Giardia, which are common in Jersey City due to transmission through other dogs’ feces on sidewalks and in parks.
The Value of Preventive Pet Diagnostics
Regular diagnostic testing is an essential part of preventive care, especially for senior pets or those with chronic conditions. Early detection through routine pet diagnostics allows for more effective treatment and better outcomes.
